Later, Kristian and his children are leaving while his wife Idun Torp works at the local hotel for a few more days. Waiting for the ferry, Kristian has an epiphany after observing surrounding events and rushes back to the geology center, leaving his children Sondre Oftebro and Julia Sande in the car.

There, he convinces them the waters are having a profound effect on the crevasse. He heads up by helicopter with Jacob, where they find the instrument-connected wires have snapped.

Having done what he can, Kristian returns to his car, but finds the children were impatient and went to the hotel. There, he apologizes and Idun tells the children to sleep at the hotel for the night, but Julia wants to say goodbye to their house by spending one last night there.

Kristian drives home with her to stay there one last time. Meanwhile, Sondre is bored in his hotel room and heads down to the basement with headphones to skateboard.

Instrument calculations indicate contraction changes in the crevasse, thus Arvid and Jacob head there to check the "C-pumps" used to measure specific conditions ; they find the readings are accurate and not a malfunction.

Kristian reviews his old documents and finds contractions can be a sign of an upcoming avalanche, due to water pressure changing within the mountain.

Kristian dials the station and orders his colleagues to evacuate Arvid and Jacob from the crevasse immediately and sound the outdoor warning alarms to alert the residents of Geiranger that there is an imminent threat of a tsunami.

Moments later, the avalanche happens; Arvid decides to sacrifice himself, linking Jacob to their zip-line after his foot is trapped, falling to his death shortly after.

With ten minutes on the countdown, Kristian rushes to Geiranger with Julia to pick up his wife and son, but Idun orders them to ascend to safety.

She and her colleague Vibeke desperately attempt to evacuate the hotel patrons onto a waiting bus, but Sondre is nowhere to be found.

Time is quickly running out, but Idun refuses to leave him. Two Danish tourists Maria and Philip Poulsen are following her on the search.

Kristian and Julia are stuck in traffic trying to get up the mountain, and realizing their altitude is dangerously low, they start running uphill on foot, yelling for everyone else to do the same.

During the rush, a man forgets to set the car's brake, causing it to roll backwards and trap Anna's leg Kristian's former neighbor.

Kristian sends Julia up the mountain with Thomas Anna's husband and Teresa, their daughter. With seconds until wave impact, Kristian seats himself and Anna in a van in a desperate attempt to survive.

The tsunami engulfs the vehicle into a chaotic underwater maelstrom. Idun finds Sondre, but the tsunami approaches too quickly. Rushing back downstairs to the basement's bomb shelter, the wave strikes the hotel violently and washes Maria away, forcing Idun to close the shelter's door after convincing Philip that Maria is already dead.

Kristian realizes he miraculously survived the maelstrom, but finds Anna next to him dead, having been impaled by a large piece of debris.

After Kristian finds Julia alive, he leaves her with Thomas and his daughter, while he heads back to Geiranger to find the rest of his family.

The town has been wiped off the map, and he finds the evacuation bus, filled with dead passengers, including Vibeke.

Notes: Original Third Wave teacher Ron Jones has a brief cameo appearance in the film sitting at a restaurant table during the town tagging sequence.

Ron also appears in the German DVD extras, visiting the set during filming. And DVD extras also include a softer ending version of the film.

It reviews the original Third Wave class, with interviews from teacher Ron Jones and several of the original Third Wave students, as well the school principal, a school board member, a parent, and others.

Philip Zimbardo, creator of the Stanford Prison Experiment, provides the analysis.

Cary Darling. A punchy and visually arresting calling card that announces the arrival of the filmmaker's bold style. Katie Walsh. I found myself really impressed by this movie.

It's a first feature and has a lot of ambition to it You come out of this going "that movie is good, but that director is going to be great.

Amy Nicholson. It's a movie designed to replicate the confusion of its protagonist, but ultimately reflects the confusion of everyone who made it.

Brian Tallerico. This fever dream feels more derivative than distinctive, entertaining and eventful as it is.

Still, it's a well-cast, well-crafted stab at something offbeat Dennis Harvey. By the time a now lucid Frank finally acknowledges the cryptic messages that have been relentlessly swirling around him, "The Wave's" giddy effect comes crashing down where viewer involvement is concerned.

Michael Rechtshaffen. Still, it's fun, doesn't overuse psychedelic visuals, and as a debut feature, shows off an inventive and peculiar eye.

Brent McKnight. A wild and multi-genre ride. There are messages on life throughout, but it gets muddled in the confused plotting.

Chauncey K. Raquel Stecher. Kristy Puchko. There are missteps here, but the combination of Justin Long and the overall vibe wind up saving the day, especially when mixed with some of Klabin's visual stylings.

Joey Magidson. Featuring a solid turn from Justin Long, The Wave is a delightfully different drug comedy.

While it may not be the most important film of the year, its messages about anyone being able to change and chasing happiness feel timely and engaging.

The Wave is a small-town Norwegian disaster movie writ satisfyingly large. Kate Muir. More than anything, The Wave's ability to sustain tension out of its tired scenario makes it even more impressive than its Me Decade ancestors.

David Fear. The whole thing is pure formula. Rene Rodriguez. The movie works; the setting feels grandly unfamiliar, and the aftermath of the wave, with its elemental mix of water and fire, seems like a plausible vision of Hell.

Anthony Lane. Something like The Wave is indeed a rarity - without skimping on the spectacle that glues eyeballs to the screen, it takes the time to develop its characters.

James Berardinelli. Having laid out my qualms in advance, I am happy to report that The Wave It's also pretty strange.

Peter Rainer. Other than its Nordic setting, The Wave has nothing new to offer the genre, lifting its entire structure from any number of volcano or earthquake films we've seen dozens of times already.

Hilary A White. David Harris. Joey Keogh. There's a reason why formulas and cliches have developed the way they do: when they're executed well, they just work.

Andrew Todd. While The Wave is an incredibly well-made movie, perhaps even the most well-made in the genre, it still falls into the cliches.

That's what prevents it from being a great movie. Karl Delossantos. The disaster would pack more of a punch if we'd spent more time with the threatened community.
