Top positive review. Reviewed in the United States on June 15, Yet, all they knew was the movie's general topic and Redford's politics. I am a conservative who is organically suspicious of the press and it's motives [and Redford's too].
I went to see it because I wanted to see a particular actor's performance. THEY thought it was a kind of tribute to young activists. It was much more lessons of suddenly losing control over a situation and your changing values over a long period of time spent on the run.
This movie has a unique perspective. It covers the actions of politically active young adults over many years, including years years beyond their activism.
It bridges the gap between being an idealistic and involved young adult set against the ideological changes that come with finding one's growing niche in society.
Finally, the movie is a commentary on the honesty about ourselves we finally develop over time about the events of our past. An honesty that sees through the many ways we deceived even ourselves at the time.
I know. My generation lived through this already. This long view theme is VERY well done. I recommend this movie to all conservatives and all liberals and everyone in between.
This film does not glorify activism or terrorism. Quite the opposite. It shows a person can set out on a cause and find themselves having crossed the line from being an activist to something worse.
The movie then becomes a retrospective of an activist's two lives — the first one given to him at birth by parents that loved them, but one they have to abandon when he chose to run rather than stand trial.
And the second tenuous life-on-the-run he had to build afterward. In our system, if you do the crime you should do your time. Once paid for, you can try to rebuild your life.
Once your debt is paid, closure begins. However, should you be "successful" in escaping justice for the time being, there can be and ought to be severe, continuing and or future costs to the alleged criminal.
While he is on the run, the effects of his deeds weigh very heavily on friends and family, the victims and THEIR families and even society at large.
In total the pain and suffering can easily seem to outweigh the costs they had avoided or delayed. I define these added costs to be the mounting private costs everyone else pays instead of the activist while he's on the run.
The focus of this movie becomes the balance between the pain and suffering the activist avoids while on the run, against the costs the activist will incur if caught plus the serious "costs" foisted off upon loved ones, friends, victims and THEIR loved ones.
Sloan was guilty of something, but NOT the murder of the bank guard. His REAL crimes, if caught, were worth some jail time but not what was being asked of him.
Sloan would have had to pay a huge public cost for something he didn't do. So he ran, but now the private costs are starting to mount up on him, but especially friends, family and everyone else.
Notably, an 11 year-old daughter who hadn't even been born yet and an older daughter that had no known connection to Sloane.
This is a VERY tightly packed movie, hardly a word that isn't important to the development of the plot. Redford tries to make his point the old fashioned way, without car chases, gun battles and funny sidekicks.
The biggest "flaw" in the movie is the timeline. The book sets the time around The movie sets the timeline around because Redford was The youngest he could play his role was as an early 60 year old lawyer This caused the daughter in the book to be much older.
She was both the secret that had to be kept and the child to be protected. The movie's extended timeline made the first daughter the secret to be kept, and the second daughter invented as the child to be protected.
This flaw springs from the fact that Redford's movie would not be financed without Redford as the box office draw. By the way, this movie has a ton of great talent in it, and they each do very well for themselves and the presentation of the movie's moral.
There are 14 class act performers, plus one. This would be a hard cast to play against, but plus one did a super job in her first movie role as the 11 year old daughter.
Top critical review. Reviewed in the United States on January 30, Robert Redford used to not be preachy--there, I said it, believe it or not.
This movie has some solid performances and seeing Julie Christie in a film is incredible. Great ensemble cast that makes it less likely Robert can sink it with his politics.
Even Shia LaBeouf didn't screw it up. Solid watch. One person found this helpful. Sort by. Top reviews Most recent Top reviews.

This was a very good movie with sparkling, deep performances by big named actors. Redford as a director is one of the best and he doesn't cheat anywhere.
All the money, all the focus is on the screen. Having said all that, I thought Redford and Julie Christy were too old for the roles they played.
Not that it can't happen, but how does Redford in his late 70s have a twelve year old daughter? Alternate Versions. Rate This.
